Putting a Spring in Your Step: Healthy Aging this March in San Jose

Sara Leonard 02 Mar 2026

March in San Jose is a special time. The cherry blossoms at Kelley Park begin to bloom, the days get longer, and there’s a renewed energy in the air. At Seniors Helping Seniors® San Jose, we believe spring is the perfect season to refresh our habits and focus on what helps our local seniors thrive.

This March, we are highlighting two major themes: National Nutrition Month and Safe Spring Activity.

Fueling Independence: National Nutrition Month

Eating well isn’t just about “dieting”—for seniors, it’s about maintaining the energy needed to stay independent. This year’s theme, “Serving Up Solutions,” is exactly what our caregivers do every day.

Seasonal Eating: March brings fresh California produce, such as strawberries and artichokes, to our local farmers’ markets.

How We Help: Our caregivers assist with grocery shopping and meal preparation, ensuring seniors have delicious, nutrient-dense meals that meet their specific dietary needs.

March Kitchen Connection: Fresh Flavors & New Beginnings

This month, we’re highlighting a dish that is as flavorful as it is healthy. It’s a “no-stove” recipe, making it a safe and engaging activity for seniors to do alongside their caregiver.

15-Minute Healthy Moroccan-Spiced Greek Yogurt Chicken Salad

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups cooked chicken breast, shredded or cubed (Rotisserie chicken works great!)
  • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt (a protein-packed alternative to mayo)
  • 1 tsp honey (for a touch of sweetness)
  • 1/2 tsp ground cumin & 1/4 tsp ground coriander
  • 1/4 cup celery, finely diced (for crunch)
  • 2 tbsp golden raisins or dried cranberries
  • Optional: Sliced almonds or fresh cilantro for garnish

Instructions:

  1. The Base: In a medium bowl, whisk together the Greek yogurt, honey, cumin, and coriander until smooth and creamy.
  2. The Mix: Fold in the shredded chicken, diced celery, and raisins. Stir gently until everything is evenly coated in those fragrant Moroccan spices.
  3. The Finish: Season with a pinch of salt and pepper to taste. Top with sliced almonds or cilantro if desired.
  4. Serve: Enjoy it tucked into a whole-wheat pita, scooped onto a bed of fresh greens, or even on its own!

Why we love it: The Greek yogurt provides essential probiotics and calcium, while the warm spices offer anti-inflammatory benefits. It’s soft, easy to chew, and incredibly refreshing.

Enjoying the San Jose Sunshine

With temperatures climbing into the mid-60s, it’s a great time to get outdoors. Whether it’s a gentle stroll through the Japanese Friendship Garden or simply sitting on the porch, a little Vitamin D goes a long way for bone health and mood.

  • Safety First: We provide the transportation and companionship needed to make these outings safe and stress-free.

A Message to Our Senior Living Community Partners

We know that the staff at San Jose’s wonderful senior living communities work incredibly hard to manage the medical and daily needs of their residents. Seniors Helping Seniors® San Jose is here to be your partner, not your replacement.
Our caregivers provide the one-on-one companionship that residents crave—taking them for walks, playing games, or providing specialized memory support for those with Alzheimer’s. This allows your team to focus on clinical care while we ensure no resident feels lonely.

“Seniors Helping Seniors® San Jose is more than just care; it’s about a peer-to-peer connection that feels like family.”
