What the Holidays might mean to you

The holidays can feel like they’re all about buying gifts, baking desserts, and decorating the house–and sure those are all elements–beyond all of the stuff, the holidays are about reconnecting to beliefs, to gratitude, and to our loved ones.

For those who celebrate Christmas, the cultural tradition of Santa Claus sliding down the chimney to deliver presents below the garland-wrapped trees is a vital aspect of the day.  So are stockings stuffed with trinkets, homemade gingerbread houses, and epic family feasts. From a religious perspective, those who celebrate may also attend a special Christmas mass to recognize the birth of Jesus Christ, their savior.

Kwanzaa, derived from the Swahili phrase for first fruits, is a seven day holiday surrounding
African American heritage. It was founded in 1966 in the U.S. as a way for African Americans to foster unity during a time marred by incredible racial conflict. Today, many who recognize Kwanzaa gather with friends and families who decorate with red, black and green–the colors of the Pan-African flag. They celebrate camaraderie and reflect on the history of the holiday.

Hanukkah celebrates the rededication of the second Jewish Temple in Jerusalem following an 8-day battle known as the Maccabean Revolt. Hanukkah, which means dedication in Hebrew is also known as the Festival of Lights. Each night, those of Jewish faith celebrate by lighting one candle of a menorah from left to right. They may say a prayer each night, while engaging in the cultural traditions of giving gifts, playing dreidel and eating foods like latkes.

Regardless of the religious or cultural tradition, the holiday season is such a special time to carve out and step away from daily to-do lists. It’s a time to be thankful for our lives, our possessions, and our families.

As much as we would like to have all of our family members gathered together for the holidays sometimes medical, logistic or other reasons prevent us from being able to have our senior loved ones with us during these days.

From short visits to overnight stays, we can help your loved one maintain their own independence, and put your mind at ease while you’re away.
