Senior Care Expert in Broward County, FL Explains Why Physical Activity is Essential to Healthy Aging

To recognize National Senior Health Fitness Day (May 25th), Seniors Helping Seniors® franchise owner Diana Cabassi outlines the benefits of exercise for seniors and offers examples of workouts they can do.

BROWARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Exercise is good for you, especially if you’re over the age of 65. As we age, our energy levels decrease, and our bodies become more fragile. Doctors and senior-care experts say in order to prevent problems and risk of falling or injury, older individuals should aim to be as active as possible.

“Regular physical activity and exercise for seniors helps improve mental and physical health, both of which will help them maintain their independence as they age” said Diana Cabassi, owner of Seniors Helping Seniors® in southwest Broward County, FL. “Exercise can help prevent disease, decrease the risk of falling, and improve mental health and cognitive function. All of these are so important.”

Exercises for Seniors to Improve Physical and Mental Health

Wednesday, May 25th, is National Senior Fitness Day. For seniors and their caregivers who are looking to add a little activity to their routine, Diana Cabassi recommends that older adults spend about 150 minutes a week doing some sort of moderately-intense activity like brisk walking. Additionally, some household chores and yard work can increase the heart rate. Muscle strengthening activities and exercises to improve balance should be also included.

For a low-impact exercise option, yoga is a great choice with many physical benefits as well as the ability to help sharpen your mind and relieve stress. You can read about the benefits of yoga, the different types, and when it is not recommended, here. If you are looking for something simpler, there are many easy exercise ideas for seniors to start with here. These are activities anyone can do with a friend or with a Seniors Helping Seniors caregiver.

“What we learned during the pandemic was that people crave social interaction,” said Diana Cabassi. “Exercising together is a great way to connect.”
