Fall Prevention: Simple Steps to Help Seniors Stay Safe and Independent

Heather Maver 09 Sep 2026

Falls are one of the most common — and most preventable — dangers facing older adults. In fact, falls are a leading cause of injury for seniors, often resulting in fractures, hospital stays, or a loss of confidence that can lead to reduced activity and independence. The good news is that a few fall prevention tips and thoughtful changes at home and in daily routines can help ensure the safety and independence of seniors in the home.

Make the Home Safer

A lot of falls happen right at home. Simple adjustments can make a big difference:

  • Remove loose rugs, clutter, and cords from walkways
  • Add grab bars in bathrooms and near stairs
  • Improve lighting in hallways, staircases, and entryways
  • Keep frequently used items within easy reach to avoid unnecessary stretching or climbing
  • Stay Active and Build Strength

Regular movement helps maintain balance, flexibility, and leg strength that protect against falls. Activities like walking, chair yoga, or balance exercises can meaningfully lower the risk of a fall.  You don’t need to spend an hour exercising, a few minutes each day can add up over time — and it’s never too late to start.

Wear the Right Footwear

Supportive, well-fitting shoes with non-slip soles make a real difference. Loose slippers or walking in socks on hard floors are common, and avoidable, fall risks.
