Sara Leonard 02 Apr 2026

April has arrived in the Santa Clara Valley, bringing with it a vibrant energy. From the artistic showcases at the Leininger Center to Earth Day festivities in our local parks, San Jose is the place to be for active seniors. At Seniors Helping Seniors® San Jose, we believe that staying engaged with our community is the best way to maintain a youthful spirit and a healthy mind.

Local Spotlight: Older Adults 50+ Art & Wellness Fair

Mark your calendars for Friday, April 3rd! The City of San José is hosting the citywide Art & Wellness Fair at the Leininger Center (1300 Senter Rd) from 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM. Our caregivers love these outings—we provide transportation and companionship so you can enjoy the creativity stress-free.

  • The Experience: This is a joyful celebration featuring artwork from 14 different community centers, interactive wellness experiences, and a chance to connect with fellow neighbors.
  • How We Help: Our caregivers love these outings! We can provide the transportation, help with the pre-registration process, and act as a companion throughout the fair so you can enjoy the creativity without any stress.

Celebrating Earth Day in the South Bay

On April 22nd, San Jose celebrates Earth Day. It’s a wonderful time to visit the Japanese Friendship Garden or participate in a gentle “Nature Appreciation Walk.” Our caregivers can accompany you on these strolls, ensuring you stay steady on your feet while soaking in the beauty of the spring bloom.

Recipe: Sheet-Pan Lemon Salmon & Asparagus

Asparagus is at its peak in April! This “one-pan” recipe is high in Omega-3s for brain health and incredibly easy to clean up.

Ingredients:

  • 2 Salmon fillets (approx. 5 oz each)
  • 1 bunch fresh asparagus (ends trimmed)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard mixed with 1 tsp honey
  • Half a lemon, sliced into rounds
  • Salt, pepper, and a pinch of garlic powder

Instructions:

  1. Preheat: Set your oven to 375°F.
  2. Prep the Veg: Place asparagus on a large baking sheet, drizzle with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Toss to coat.
  3. The Salmon: Place salmon fillets on the same sheet. Brush the tops with the honey-mustard mixture.
  4. The Finish: Top the salmon and asparagus with lemon slices.
  5. Bake: Cook for 12–15 minutes until the salmon flakes easily with a fork and asparagus is tender-crisp.
  6. Caregiver Tip: This is a great “collaborative” meal. Our caregivers can handle the vegetable trimming and oven management while you focus on the seasoning and “plating” the final masterpiece!
