April in San Jose is in full bloom! This week, our city is buzzing with Earth Day preparations and the return of some of our favorite outdoor traditions. At Seniors Helping Seniors® San Jose, we believe that staying connected to the pulse of our city is the best way to keep life exciting and fulfilling.
San Jose News & Local Happenings
- Viva CalleSJ (Sunday, April 19): Get ready for the return of San Jose’s massive “open streets” program! From 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, miles of city streets will be closed to cars and open for walking, biking, and socializing. It’s a fantastic way to see the city from a new perspective.
- Santana Row Earth Day Celebration: Also on Sunday, April 19 (11:00 AM), Santana Row is hosting an Earth Day festival. Expect live solar-powered music, lawn games, and exhibits about local land conservation. It’s a perfect, accessible outing for seniors who enjoy a lively atmosphere.
- City Update: The City of San José recently announced the return of Animal Care and Services to the Parks Department—a great reminder to visit our local parks and perhaps say hello to some furry friends at the local shelters!
Recipe: Vibrant Spring Pea Soup (Heart-Healthy)

This week’s recipe is a bright, silky soup that celebrates the peak of pea season. It’s soft, easy to digest, and packed with fiber.
Ingredients:
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 white onion (chopped)
- 2 cloves garlic (minced)
- 4 cups fresh peas (or frozen)
- 4 cups vegetable broth
- Lemon juice, salt, and pepper to taste
Instructions:
- Sauté: Heat olive oil in a large pot. Add onion and garlic, cooking until soft and fragrant (about 5 minutes).
- Simmer: Add the broth and peas. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10–15 minutes until peas are very tender.
- Puree: Use an immersion blender to blend until smooth. (If using a standard blender, let it cool slightly first!)
- Finish: Stir in a squeeze of fresh lemon juice and season to taste.
Caregiver Tip: This soup is wonderful served warm or chilled! Our caregivers love helping with the blending and “taste-testing” to ensure it’s seasoned perfectly.
A Note to Our San Jose Senior Living Partners
Events like Viva CalleSJ are wonderful, but they can be overwhelming for residents to navigate alone. Seniors Helping Seniors® San Jose is here to support your community by providing the 1-on-1 assistance that makes these outings possible.
Why Referral Partners Choose Us:
- 1-on-1 Outing Support: We provide dedicated companions to escort residents to local festivals, ensuring they stay hydrated, safe, and engaged.
- Environmental Wellness: In honor of Earth Month, we can help residents with “light green” tasks, like tending to balcony plants or organizing a spring “clean and green” of their living spaces.
- Consistency: For residents with memory challenges, we provide a familiar face that builds a bridge of belonging between your community and the greater San Jose area.
