March in San Jose is a time for connection. Whether it’s the blooming cherry blossoms at Kelley Park or the festive spirit of St. Patrick’s Day, there is so much for our seniors to enjoy. At Seniors Helping Seniors® San Jose, we believe that staying active and involved is the key to maintaining independence.
Community Connection: Silicon Valley Reads 2026
This month, the San Jose Public Library system is celebrating Silicon Valley Reads with the theme “Bridges to Belonging.” This program encourages our community to build connections through shared stories. Our caregivers can provide transportation to the Berryessa or Cambrian Library to pick up this year’s featured books—reading together is a wonderful way for seniors to stay sharp and connected.
A Taste of the Emerald Isle: Slow-Cooker Corned Beef
For many of our seniors, St. Patrick’s Day isn’t complete without a traditional meal. Our caregivers specialize in “no-stress” cooking that fills the home with wonderful aromas without the strain of standing over a stove.

Ingredients:
- 3 lb Lean corned beef brisket (with spice packet)
- 4 large carrots, cut into chunks
- 1 lb baby yellow potatoes (no peeling needed!)
- 2 parsnips, sliced (adds fiber!)
- 1 small head of cabbage, cut into wedges
- 3 cups low-sodium beef broth
The How-To:
- Layer: Place carrots, potatoes, and parsnips in the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker.
- Add Meat: Place the brisket on top; sprinkle with the spice packet.
- Liquid: Pour broth over everything.
- Cook: Cover and cook on Low for 8 to 10 hours.
- The Cabbage: One hour before serving, tuck the cabbage wedges into the liquid.
- Serve: Slice against the grain and enjoy!
Why we love it: Using a slow cooker eliminates the need for a hot stove and heavy pots. It’s a great way for seniors to enjoy the “smells of home” all day without the physical strain of standing in the kitchen.
Simple, Social, and Green: Clover Paper Chains Made Easy
Clover paper chains are a simple and festive craft that add a cheerful touch to your home—perfect for spring decorating or St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. They’re easy to make, budget-friendly, and a great activity for kids, seniors, or anyone who enjoys hands-on creativity.

What You’ll Need:
- Green construction paper (you can mix light and dark greens for dimension)
- Scissors
- Glue stick or stapler
- Pencil (optional for tracing)
- Cut Your Strips
- Start by cutting your green paper into strips about ½ to ¾ inch wide and 4–6 inches long. Try to keep the strips even so your clovers look uniform. You’ll need three strips per clover.
- Shape the Clover Leaves
- Take one strip and bend both ends inward toward the center, forming a heart shape. Secure the ends together with glue or a staple at the bottom point.
- Repeat this step two more times so you have three heart shapes.
- Form the Clover
- Arrange the three hearts so their pointed ends meet at the bottom. Glue or staple them together at the base. Once secured, gently fan out the tops to create a three-leaf clover shape.
- Step 4: Create the Chain
- To turn your clovers into a chain:
- Add a small strip loop to the back of one clover.
- Thread the next clover through the loop before securing it.
- Continue linking them together until your chain reaches your desired length.
- Add a Stem (Optional)
- Cut a thin strip of darker green paper and attach it to the bottom to create a stem for each clover.
Supporting Our Senior Living Partners
For residents in local senior living communities, we know the staff is busy coordinating large-scale St. Patrick’s Day events. Seniors Helping Seniors® provides that extra layer of 1-on-1 support.
- Personalized Care: We can help a resident dress in their favorite “lucky” green outfit, accompany them to the community party, or provide specialized memory care for those who find large crowds overwhelming.
Ready to Make the Most of March?
From helping with a traditional Irish meal to providing transportation to the library, we are here to support San Jose seniors in living their best, most independent lives.
