Shaken but Steady: Earthquake Safety and Spring Events in San Jose

Sara Leonard 18 Apr 2026

Did you feel it? The recent earthquake in the early hours of April 2nd was a wake-up call, reminding everyone of the necessity of preparation. Although the city of San Jose was fortunately not affected by the quake, instances like this one tend to leave a person, and especially his elderly relatives, a little shaky. It’s our goal at Seniors Helping Seniors® San Jose to keep our seniors feeling strong and sturdy.

Calamity Readiness: 3 “Must-Dos” for Seniors

For seniors living independently, earthquake safety is about more than just “Drop, Cover, and Hold On.” It’s about preparation:

  1. Secure the Essentials: Ensure heavy furniture like bookcases is anchored and that walking aids (canes/walkers) are kept at the bedside.
  2. The “Buddy” System: Have a designated person to check in with after a tremor. Our caregivers often act as that vital first contact.
  3. Vial of Life: Keep a list of medications and emergency contacts in a “Vial of Life” on your refrigerator so first responders have instant access to your needs.

Local Activity: “Sensational Seniors” at the Zoo

If the recent tremors have kept you indoors, it’s time to get out and enjoy the fresh air!

  • The Event: Next Thursday, April 16th, Happy Hollow Park & Zoo is hosting Sensational Seniors: Quarantine Quandaries.
  • The Experience: This seniors-only program includes a mini walking tour, animal encounters, and a light breakfast. It’s a wonderful way to socialize in a peaceful setting.
  • How We Help: Our caregivers provide door-to-door transportation and can walk alongside you throughout the zoo, ensuring you enjoy the animals safely.

Recipe: “Calm & Cozy” Slow-Cooker Chicken Noodle Soup

After a stressful event like an earthquake, there is nothing better than a warm bowl of soup. This recipe is easy to prep and light on the stomach.

  • 1 lb chicken breast
  • 3 large carrots & 2 celery stalks (chopped)
  • 1 box low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 2 cups wide egg noodles (added at the end)

The How-To:

  1. Set: Place chicken, chopped veggies, broth, and thyme in a slow cooker.
  2. Slow Cook: Cook on Low for 6 hours.
  3. Finish: Remove chicken and shred it. Add it back to the pot along with the egg noodles.
  4. Final Stretch: Cook for another 20 minutes until noodles are soft.

Caregiver Tip: This is a perfect meal for us to prep in the morning so you have a warm, comforting dinner ready by evening.
