Your Hyper-Local Senior Resource Guide for San Luis Obispo County

Navigating the world of senior services can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re trying to find the right support for yourself or a loved one while juggling work, distance, and daily responsibilities. The good news is that San Luis Obispo County is home to a rich network of local organizations, programs, and services designed specifically to help older adults live well, stay connected, and remain independent.

Whether you’re in San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles, Atascadero, Arroyo Grande, or anywhere in between, this guide is your starting point for finding the help you need right here on the Central Coast.

1. Your First Call: Senior Connection and the Area Agency on Aging

When you’re not sure where to start, Senior Connection is one of the most valuable resources available. The Central Coast Commission for Senior Citizens, Area Agency on Aging (AAA), is a non-profit organization responsible for allocating federal and state dollars to local agencies to ensure that supportive, nutrition, and health promotion services are available to older adults in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties. [1]

The AAA is responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing programs that promote the health, dignity, and well-being of older adults. [2] Their Senior Connection program offers a free Senior Resource Directory covering a wide range of senior services available in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties. [3]

Not sure what you need? Just call (800) 510-2020, Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM. Whether it’s help finding the phone number to the local senior center or figuring out what your care options are, they can point you in the right direction. [4]

2. Nutrition and Meals: Staying Nourished and Connected

Proper nutrition is foundational to healthy aging, and in SLO County, no senior should go hungry or eat alone.

Meals That Connect is the Senior Nutrition Program of San Luis Obispo County. Every weekday, Meals That Connect provides free, healthy, noontime meals to over 2,000 seniors age 60 and older throughout San Luis Obispo County. [5] Seniors can gather at one of ten countywide dining sites to dine together, exchange stories, and develop friendships or, for those who are homebound, volunteer drivers deliver meals directly to their door. [6]

The program serves any senior age 60 or older who asks for service, regardless of income. [7] Beyond the meal itself, volunteer drivers provide regular companionship and use their frequent visits to check on the safety of homebound seniors, a meaningful lifeline for those living alone. [8]

To learn more or sign up, call (805) 541-3312 or visit mealsthatconnect.org.

3. Transportation: Getting Where You Need to Go

  • Ride-On Transportation: (805) 541-8747 — Regional shuttle service
  • Senior Go!: (805) 473-3333 — Serving the Five Cities area
  • Atascadero Dial-A-Ride: (805) 466-7433
  • Paso Robles Dial-A-Ride: (805) 239-8747
  • Templeton-Paso Robles Dial-A-Ride: (805) 541-2544
  • Five Cities Senior Shuttle: (805) 473-3333
  • Morro Bay Call-A-Ride: (805) 772-2744

For those who prefer a more personal touch, SLO Village’s Good Neighbor Program through Wilshire Community Services also offers volunteer driver support at (805) 547-7025 x17. [9]

4. Senior Centers: Community, Activities, and More

Senior centers are the heartbeat of local senior life, offering everything from fitness classes and social clubs to information and referral services.

San Luis Obispo Senior Center

The City of San Luis Obispo Parks and Recreation Department provides ongoing recreation classes and activities for little to no cost to participating senior community members age 55 and older. [10] The SLO Senior Center is open Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and can be reached at (805) 781-7306. [10]

For those who love the outdoors, the SLO Walkers and Hikers program is a unique initiative catering to seniors interested in exploring walks and hikes in the scenic environments of San Luis Obispo City and County, tailored specifically for individuals aged 55 and older. [11]

Paso Robles Senior Center

The Paso Robles Senior Center is widely recognized as a premier senior program on the Central Coast. It is a multiservice senior center providing a broad spectrum of services suited to the diverse needs and interests of independent older adults. [12] Services include nutritional meals, health and wellness screenings, mental health information, social clubs, and information and referral on home care, transportation, housing, and more. [13] The center is open Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM, and can be reached at (805) 237-3880. [14]

The Senior Citizen Advisory Committee (SCAC) in Paso Robles also serves as an advisory body to the Mayor and City Council, advocating for senior citizens and serving as an information source on aging topics. [15]

5. Aging in Place: Community Support Through SLO Village

For seniors who want to remain in their own homes while staying socially engaged, SLO Village offers a unique model of community-based support. SLO Village is a vibrant community working together to create a better experience of aging, with members and volunteers enjoying social events, activities, and educational opportunities. Vetted volunteers help with transportation, technology, and home and garden maintenance services to make aging in place easier and more enjoyable. [16]

This village model is a powerful complement to in-home care services, helping seniors stay rooted in their neighborhoods while accessing the support they need.

Contact SLO Village at (805) 242-6440 or visit slovillage.org.

6. Mental Health and Behavioral Health Support

Mental and emotional well-being is just as important as physical health, and SLO County has resources to help.

The SLO County Behavioral Health Department provides compassionate behavioral health services to individuals and families. For access to services, call their access line at (800) 838-1381. [17]

For older adults with more intensive needs, the Older Adult Full Service Partnership (FSP) provides an intensive intervention team for older adults age 60 and older with a serious mental illness, offering a whatever-it-takes approach to promoting wellness. [18] This program specifically supports older adults who are at risk of inappropriate or premature out-of-home placement due to serious mental illness. [19]

For mental health support at the community level, Wilshire Community Service, Inc. provides multi-level services for seniors at risk for mental illness, with support from the Mental Health Services Act. [20] They are located at 285 South Street, Suite J, San Luis Obispo.

For crisis support, the Central Coast Hotline is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, free of charge. [21]

7. Financial Resources and Benefits Assistance

Many seniors live on a fixed income, and navigating benefits can be confusing. The SLO County Commission on Aging provides seniors with information regarding scams, banking, and benefits, and also offers advocacy at doctor office visits, assistance with prescription medications, Medicare, health insurance, and long-term care options. [22]

The AAA also allocates funding each year to support a wide range of services, including home-delivered meals, senior lunches, in-home supportive services, homemaker services, telephone reassurance, respite for caregivers, long-term care ombudsman services, information and referral, transportation, legal assistance, senior day care, home repair, peer counseling, care management, health insurance counseling, Alzheimer’s Day Care Resource Centers, elder abuse prevention, and more. [23]

For subsidized housing options in SLO County, the Senior Connection program publishes a free housing list available through the Area Agency on Aging. Call (800) 510-2020 to request a copy. [24]
