Senior Resources in Torrance, CA: A Quick Guide for Families
Torrance has one of the most developed senior services networks in the South Bay, largely thanks to the Focal Point on Aging program. This guide walks through the community resources available to Torrance seniors and their families, from transportation to meal programs to legal help.
If your loved one needs hands-on daily support in addition to these resources, that is exactly what Seniors Helping Seniors® South Bay provides.
Start Here: Focal Point on Aging
The Focal Point on Aging is Torrance’s central information and referral hub for older adults. Trained volunteers help assess your situation and point you toward the right resource, whether that’s transportation, housing, Medicare counseling, Meals on Wheels, or legal services.
Phone: (310) 320-1300 (Monday–Friday, 9am–12pm)
Location: Russ Nolte Annex, 1339 Post Avenue, Torrance, CA 90501 (next to Bartlett Senior Citizens Center)
If you are not sure where to start, this is the number to call first.
Senior Centers
Torrance operates three senior centers offering fitness classes, games, arts and crafts, day trips, and social events for older adults.
Bartlett Senior Citizens Center
Phone: (310) 320-5918
Congregate meals available (suggested donation around $3), legal counseling and Medicare counseling available by appointment.
Walteria Senior Center and Ken Miller Recreation Center also host senior programming, including cards, mahjong, and fitness classes. Call the Focal Point line above for current schedules and locations.
Transportation
Torrance Community Transit Program (TCTP)
Combines the former Senior Ride and Dial-A-Lift programs into curb-to-curb taxi service for Torrance residents 65+ or with disabilities. Riders purchase ride credits in advance ($1 to $5 depending on income) at the Transit Store.
Registration/questions: (310) 781-2174 or (310) 781-2176
Torrance Transit Store: Mary K. Giordano Regional Transit Center, 465 Crenshaw Blvd., Torrance, CA 90503
Dial-A-Taxi (for residents with disabilities)
Requires a physician-completed application. $1 per ride regardless of income. Same registration numbers as above.
Meals and Food Resources
Congregate meals are available at Bartlett Senior Center (see above). For home-delivered meals or food assistance, call the Focal Point on Aging at (310) 320-1300, which maintains current referrals since specific meal providers change from year to year.
Home Improvement and Safety
City of Torrance Home Improvement Program (HIP)
A free program helping income-qualified seniors and residents with disabilities complete home safety modifications. Contact the Focal Point on Aging or Torrance Community Services Department for current eligibility and application details.
Legal and Financial Help
Free legal counseling for seniors is available by appointment at Bartlett Senior Center, staffed by volunteer attorneys who visit twice a month. Call (310) 320-5918 to schedule. For Medicare-specific questions, HICAP counseling is also available by appointment through the same center.
Protecting Seniors from Scams
Older adults are frequently targeted by phone and mail scams. Never give personal or financial information to an unsolicited caller, and remember that legitimate agencies never ask for payment by gift card or wire transfer. If in doubt, hang up and call the organization back using a number you look up yourself. Report suspected scams to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
