Walking in nature is a great way for seniors to stay active, and there are so many options available here in Southwest Broward County, FL.  Nature walking trails can help relieve stress, strengthen bones, boost your mood, and help improve brain/body performance. Get a nice breath of fresh air on a soft breezy day, or pick a park with plenty of shade for a hot sunny day. There are many nearby walking paths with shade, making any day a great day to take a walk in the park.

This beautiful park in Pembroke Pines, FL has a wheelchair-accessible walking path that loops around the whole park. On one side of the park you will find a pond with swans, ducks, and other beautiful wildlife. This walking path is mixed with sections of open sunlight and shade provided by the wide oak trees located around the whole park. This park also has benches and picnic areas available.

Chapel Trail Nature Preserve in Pembroke Pines, FL is a wonderful environment to see lots of different species of wildlife in their natural habitat. This nature preserve has a wheelchair-accessible boardwalk path that allows you to safely travel through the preserve. You will see various types of birds, turtles, and fish in the water. There are a few gazebos along the path to provide shade, but most of the path is unshaded.

At Ben Fiorendino Park you will see various types of trees and birds surrounding the walking paths. There is a big lake where you can sometimes spot fish swimming near the surface as well. The main walking path is made of mulch, so it may be a little more difficult to travel via wheelchair compared to a paved walkway. There are different type of trees along the walking path that will provide shade, some benches along the way, and a big gazebo with benches. However, the gazebo does not have a wheelchair-accessible ramp at the time of writing.

This popular county park in Pembroke Pines, FL has many wheelchair-accessible walking paths around the park. These pavement paths will take you around lakes and under trees, and there are three paths with pavement bridges that take you over the water. You may see iguanas, ducks, peacocks, and other wildlife around the park. Although C.B. Smith Park is known for its Water Park, you can also find other activities, such as Miniature Golf, Fishing, an Outdoor Gym and a wide variety of activities to keep you moving. Public restrooms are available and the admission fee is $1.50/person weekends and holidays (admission is free on weekdays).

This county park offers a paved wheelchair-accessible path that travels around the trees, a wooden boardwalk to see the water wildlife, and a beautiful natural dirt/mulch walkway with a wooden railing surrounded by many plants and trees. There are restrooms located in the main building, and admission is free.

This beautiful nature walking path in Davie, FL has a variety of wildlife you may see as you go along the path. Paved walking paths that are wheelchair accessible will take you along grassy areas with plenty of trees. You may sometimes spot turtles walking in the grass, and different types of birds walking around the lake. For the adventurous types, there are also some optional natural dirt/mulch walkways to see more varieties of trees. Admission is free.

Tree Tops Park is a wonderful walking experience that takes you along paved paths through various nature sights. The walking paths have sections with lots trees to provide shade. You will see different types of plants, trees, and wildlife surrounding the trees, as well as boardwalk paths that take you over water wildlife environments. Admission to visit this county park is $1.50 per person on weekends and holidays (free admission on weekdays).

This beautiful park has a paved walkway with an optional wooden boardwalk section that travels over the lake for a great waterfront view. It is a very cleanly styled park with some shade provided by trees and gazebos. Other amenities included in Peace Mound Park are restroom facilities, picnic shelters and grill, fishing dock, and a shaded playground. You may see ducks, turtles, different types of trees, plants, and other wildlife in the lake as you travel along the walking paths. Admission to this city park is free.

Library Park is a city park in Weston, FL with a beautiful, serene design. It has a great variety of plants and trees, some of which have pink and purple flowers. The tiled pavement walking paths take you along the greenery and around the magnificent Florida Author’s Fountain at the heart of the park. The gazebos are wheelchair-accessible and have benches, and additional benches are located around the park as well.

A standout feature of Library Park is the Weston History Walk plaques which are embedded into the architecture itself. You will find the plaques on the pavement, ordered with a number and an arrow pointing to the next plaque that will take you along a walk through history of the City of Weston.

The park has public restroom facilities available and admission is free. Library Park is also adjacent to the Weston Branch Library.

Emerald Estates Park is a 5-acre park located in the City of Weston. It has multiple a paved walkways which are wheelchair accessible. The paved paths will take you by a lakeside where you may see some bids and other wildlife, then around the rest of the park’s amenities. This park has fitness and sports facilities, shelters, and a playground. There are plenty of trees to provide shade as you travel along the paved walkways, as well as pavilion shelters with benches along the path. Admission is free and there are public restrooms available.

This is a wonderful simple clean wheelchair-accessible walking park in Cooper City. The city park has a paved path that follows around a lake with trees surrounding the park. The lake is fenced for safety with a thin metal mesh fence so you can still appreciate the beauty of the lakeside. You may see birds, iguanas, and other wildlife living around the park. There are no restroom facilities at this park, however admission is free.

 

Flamingo West Park

Flamingo West Park has a great wheelchair-accessible pavement walking path that takes you around two lakes with an optional wooden boardwalk pier that takes you over one of the lakes. Younger trees offer minimal shade around the walking path, however there are some pavilions with benches along the way offering shade and rest. You will find a bird watching chart along the lake that shows the different species of birds you may see in the area. This park has public restrooms and admission is free.

Tamarind Park is a wonderful walking park in Cooper City, Florida. It has a wheelchair-accessible pavement path that takes you under some big tree sections with great shade. The walking path will also pass by a lakeside where you may see owls, ducks, and other wildlife. This park is known to have Florida Burrowing Owls which make their nests underground. This park has no restroom facilities; however, admission is free.

This is a great county park for nature lovers in Miramar, Florida. This park is divided into two main sections: A pine forest in the northern half, and a wetland/prairie in the southern half. It has various wheelchair-accessible nature walking paths that take you through the different environments with unique plants and views that you may not see in other parks. There is a shorter walking path which takes you over a wetlands and prairie area where you can travel along a wooden boardwalk with a solid aluminum railing to safely see turtles swimming around. The longer walking path takes you on a paved walkway through denser tree environments where you can see different types of migrant birds depending on the season (there is a bird chart along the walking path). Admission is $1.50 per person on weekends and holidays.

 

River Run Park

River Run Park is a wonderful waterfront park in Miramar, FL. It has one main paved walking path which is wheelchair-accessible. Along the path you will see a variety of trees, a river shaped pond with a fishing dock, and some nice big trees clusters to provide shade around the walking path. This park also features outdoor exercise equipment along the walking path, a covered playground, pavilions, a tennis court, and a racquetball court. Admission is free and there are public restrooms available.

If you enjoy bird watching, Snake Warrior Island Natural Area is a great spot for a nature walk in Miramar, FL. No need to worry about the name, it’s not an island filled with snakes. The name pays homage to a leader of the Seminole tribe, Chitto Tustenuggee, otherwise known as the Snake Warrior.

This popular bird watching spot has one main paved walking path that is wheelchair-accessible, which travels around the whole natural area with a variety of birds and other wildlife. The walking path has two wooden boardwalk bridges which takes you over a wetland area. The path then follows around a lake with wide trees that provide good shade in some sections along the way. You will find a picnic table with benches in some shaded areas. Admission is free.

The paved walking trail goes in a straight path under big trees that provide plenty of shade. The longer dirt trail has various loops around the park which meander through different trees, plants, and ponds. You may see horse riders around the park, various birds and other wildlife. Vista View Park

Vista View Park is a large county park with lots of wide-open greenspace and many different walking paths to choose from. There is a wheelchair-accessible pavement path on the south side that travels along a waterfront with two fishing docks. You’ll also find a similar wheelchair-accessible path on the north side of the park, with more trees and a nearby restroom on the northeast side. This walking path is also paved and offers waterfront views.

Several dirt/mulch trails will take you around the lakes and over big grassy hills. Around the park you may find burrowing owls, various birds, and other wildlife by the lakes and trees. Admission is free during weekdays and $1.50/person during weekends and holidays.

This park also features a Plantation Junior Woman’s Club Statue, picnic areas, gazebos, and a playground area.

Markham Park is a wonderful park in Sunrise, FL with various walking paths ranging from an easy-going pavement section to an off-road natural ground path with a Butterfly Garden and a Natural Trail Forest Path that takes you out to the levee.

There are many nice pavement walking paths near Markham Park Oasis which go around the trees and by the lakeside. The Markham Park Oasis also has a curved wooden bridge which takes you to a nice little island section with a pavilion and picnic table benches.

Across from the dog park area, you will find a sidewalk path that goes down to the entrances of the Silent Wings Butterfly Garden and the Markham Park Nature Trail. The Butterfly Garden is a beautiful area with trimmed grass and mulch walkways where you will see different colors of butterflies flying around the flowers. The Nature Trail takes you out to the levee for a view of the Everglades River of Grass where different species of wading birds live. The Nature Trail starts with a wooden boardwalk bridge which continues with trimmed grass and dirt walkways surrounded by various plants and trees.

Markham Park has an entrance fee of $1.50 per person on weekends and holidays, and there are public restrooms available.
