May is a significant month for our community. Not only is it Older Americans Month, but it is also Mental Health Awareness Month. After a busy spring, this week is all about finding balance, connecting with our neighbors, feeding our bodies well, and enjoying the unique cultural pulse of San Jose. At Seniors Helping Seniors® San Jose, we believe that mental wellness is just as vital as physical health.
Local Spotlight: Stars on Ice & Community Connection
- The Event: This Sunday, May 17th, the SAP Center is hosting Stars on Ice at 4:00 PM. It’s a breathtaking display of grace and athleticism that many of our seniors find truly inspiring.
- Art & Wellness: If you prefer a quieter pace, the San Jose Museum of Art is offering “Mindful Viewing” sessions this week. Taking a moment to appreciate local art is a proven way to reduce cortisol and boost your mood.
- Safety Tip: As we hit mid-May, the valley is heating up. We remind all our seniors to stay hydrated and plan outdoor walks before 10:00 AM to avoid the midday sun.
Recipe: “Mood-Boosting” Strawberry & Almond Shortcake

Ingredients:
- 2 cups fresh San Jose strawberries (sliced)
- 1 tbsp honey or maple syrup
- 4 individual shortcake biscuits (store-bought is fine!)
- 1/2 cup Greek yogurt (a healthy alternative to heavy cream)
- 2 tbsp sliced almonds (for a brain-healthy crunch)
The How-To:
- Macerate: Toss the sliced strawberries with the honey and let them sit for 10 minutes until they become juicy.
- Assemble: Split the shortcake biscuits in half.
- Layer: Spoon a dollop of Greek yogurt onto the bottom half, followed by a generous scoop of strawberries.
- Top: Place the other half of the biscuit on top, add one more dollop of yogurt, and sprinkle with almonds.
Caregiver Tip: This is a fun, low-mess recipe! Our caregivers can help with the slicing and assembly, making it a sweet afternoon “tea time” activity.
A Partner for Mental Wellness: SHS San Jose
Isolation is one of the biggest challenges to senior mental health. Seniors Helping Seniors® San Jose provides the companionship that turns a lonely afternoon into a meaningful connection.
For our Professional Partners: We know that in residential communities, maintaining the social and emotional well-being of every resident is a massive task. We are here to support you as a referral partner.
- 1-on-1 Companionship: We provide the dedicated attention that residents need to attend events like Stars on Ice or simply to have a deep, engaging conversation over a healthy snack.
- Respite for Families: For families feeling the “caregiver burnout,” we provide the professional relief that allows them to return to their role as a son or daughter, rather than a full-time nurse.
