1. Community & Social Programs: Staying Connected Close to Home

Social connection is one of the most powerful factors in healthy aging. Fortunately, our corner of San Jose has dedicated spaces where seniors can gather, learn, and thrive.

The Almaden Senior Association

For active adults 50 and older in the Almaden Valley area, the Almaden Senior Association is a wonderful community hub. With a focus on socialization, well-being, and learning, the Association initiates and promotes programs and activities for the active adult (50+) population of San Jose. [1] It is an all-volunteer organization that plans monthly luncheons, trips, Bay Area excursions, theater outings, and special events throughout the year. [2] The Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that conducts its business at the City-operated Almaden Community Center and supports the City of San Jose Senior Program. [3]

The Almaden Community Center itself offers Active Adults (50+) Senior Recreational Programs, Nutrition Programs, and Social Services. [4] Located at 6445 Camden Ave, San Jose, CA 95120, you can reach them at (408) 268-1133.

City of San José Older Adults (50+) Programs

The City of San José Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services (PRNS) administers the Older Adults (50+) Health and Wellness Grant Program, collaborating with several nonprofit organizations and public agencies to meet the needs of the senior population. [5] This program seeks to reduce social isolation and improve the health and wellness of individuals ages 50 and up by providing quality programs at Senior Nutrition Program sites and additional service locations within the City of San José. [6]

Through this program, seniors can access behavioral health therapy, breathing and wellness classes, health screenings, dental services, and more. [7] The City also partners with TRIO Community Meals to provide nutritious meals to older adults 60+ at 13 community centers throughout the city. [8]

2. Nutrition & Meal Delivery: Staying Nourished at Home

For seniors who have difficulty shopping or cooking, meal programs can be a lifeline, providing not just nutrition, but also a daily check-in and a sense of connection.

Meals on Wheels via Sourcewise

Sourcewise partners with the Santa Clara County Senior Nutrition Program to offer Meals on Wheels for homebound adults aged 60 and older. [9] This service helps older adults stay healthy, nourished, and independent right in the comfort of their homes. [10]

Each delivery includes a mix of breakfast meals, frozen lunch or dinner entrées, milk, and fresh fruit, with menus carefully designed to meet a senior’s daily nutrition needs. [11] There is no required fee to receive meals, and no one is ever turned away if they cannot afford to contribute. [12]

If you are 60 or older and live in Santa Clara County, you can also enjoy a healthy meal at over 35 locations throughout the county. [13] Senior Nutrition Program meals are approved by registered dietitians to meet the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans. [14]

To apply for Meals on Wheels, call Sourcewise at (408) 350-3200, option 4. [15]

3. Transportation: Getting Around South San Jose

Losing the ability to drive can feel like losing independence. But there are real options available to help seniors in our area stay mobile.

VTA Senior Programs & ACCESS Paratransit

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) is committed to providing services that meet the needs of the senior community. [16] VTA offers a Senior Mobility Guide with information on public transportation, local shuttles, community and private transportation services, driver safety resources, fitness, and community information and assistance programs. [17]

For seniors and individuals with disabilities who cannot use conventional bus or light rail service, VTA ACCESS Paratransit provides shared-ride public transportation. [18] Seniors 65 and older may also qualify for discounted fares on VTA’s fixed-route services. [19]

To apply for VTA ACCESS Paratransit, call the Eligibility Department at (408) 321-2381, Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm. [20]

The County of Santa Clara’s Department of Aging and Adult Services (DAAS) also supports Age-Friendly initiatives throughout the county. Notably, Santa Clara County, including all of its cities, was designated as Age-Friendly by the World Health Organization, the first county in the nation to achieve this recognition. [29]

5. Legal Assistance: Protecting Your Rights

Legal matters can be confusing and stressful at any age. Seniors in Santa Clara County have access to free legal help through a trusted local organization.

Senior Adults Legal Assistance (SALA)

Established in 1973, SALA provides free legal services and community education to Santa Clara County residents who are age 60 or older, with no income eligibility requirement. [30] SALA specializes in matters including public benefits (Social Security, SSI, Medicare, Medi-Cal), long-term care, elder abuse, housing, consumer disputes, incapacity planning, and simple wills. [31] Their mission is to support older persons in their efforts to live safely, independently, non-institutionalized, and with dignity. [32]

SALA’s services are provided primarily through appointments at senior centers in Santa Clara County, and they also make home visits to institutionalized and homebound elders. [33] Call SALA’s Central Office at (408) 295-5991, Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm.

For seniors who need more structured daytime support, and for family caregivers who need a reliable break, adult day programs offer a meaningful solution.

Live Oak Adult Day Services

Live Oak Adult Day Services is a nonprofit, community-based agency located in Santa Clara County. [34] Their mission is twofold: providing seniors with meaningful structure and families with the solid support they need to navigate the journey of aging together. [35]

Live Oak’s program is designed to meet the needs of seniors who are unable to live independently, who need support in their daily activities, and who are unable to participate in programs for independent seniors. [36] They offer a weekday day program from 9am to 3pm, including a continental breakfast, lunch, and a snack, along with daily exercise, music and art, socialization, and cognitive games, with a client-to-staff ratio of 5 to 1.
