The Hyper-Local Senior Resource Guide for Southern Utah: St. George, Cedar City, and Beyond

Southern Utah is one of the most beautiful and fastest-growing places to age in America. With its red rock landscapes, mild winters, and tight-knit communities, it’s no wonder that retirees from across the country are calling places like St. George, Cedar City, Hurricane, and Washington City home. But as the region grows, so does the need for clear, accessible information about the local resources available to seniors and their families.

Utah’s senior population is on the rise. In 1980, fewer than 8% of Utah residents were over 65. By 2020, that share had grown to nearly 12%, and projections from the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute indicate Utah’s retirement-age population will make up more than 20% of the state’s total population by 2060. [1] Right here in Southern Utah, that trend is playing out in real time. [2]

Whether you’re a senior looking to stay active and independent, an adult child trying to navigate care options for a loved one, or a family member who lives out of state and wants peace of mind, this guide is for you. We’ve compiled the most important hyper-local resources across Washington County, Iron County, and the broader Five-County region so you can find the support you need, right in your own backyard.

Your Starting Point: The Area Agency on Aging – Five County

If there’s one organization every Southern Utah senior and family caregiver should know about, it’s the Area Agency on Aging – Five County Association of Governments (AAA). Based in St. George, the AAA has an experienced staff with extensive knowledge of community resources and can access services to meet the needs of the aging population across five counties: Beaver, Garfield, Iron, Kane, and Washington. [3]

The AAA has been providing home- and community-based case management services to frail elderly and disabled adults for over 20 years in Southern Utah. [3] Their programs and activities are designed to help older adults in the community reach their goals and fulfill their potential. [3]

Services offered through the AAA include Medicare counseling, benefit enrollment assistance, in-home support services, caregiver support programs, and connections to local senior centers throughout the region. [3] Think of the AAA as your central hub. If you’re not sure where to start, start here.

Senior Centers in Washington County

The Washington County Council on Aging operates three senior centers located in St. George, Hurricane, and Enterprise, plus a meal site in Springdale. [4] Each location serves lunch and offers a wide variety of activities. [4] The mission is clear: to provide programs and activities that enable residents of Washington County who are 60 years of age or older to live healthy and independent lives and to be treated with respect and dignity. [4]

A senior center serves as a resource center for the entire community, offering a system that links participants to services and educational opportunities, or referrals to resources offered by other community agencies. [5]

St. George Active Life Center

The St. George Active Life Center is the flagship senior hub for Washington County. With the help of countless volunteers, the center provides over 100 different activities per month. [6] From yoga, Tai Chi, and cardio drumming to pickleball, played four days a week, arts and crafts, billiards, and social groups, there truly is something for everyone. [7] [8] The center also offers computer access and instruction, health and medical screenings, support groups, and a Meals on Wheels program. [9]

Cedar City Senior Center

Meals on Wheels: Nutrition Delivered to Your Door

For seniors who have difficulty getting out or preparing meals, Meals on Wheels is a lifeline. Good nutrition is crucial as we age. Research shows seniors who do not eat nutritionally well-balanced diets often display symptoms similar to those of serious disease or illness, which may result in costly and often unnecessary treatment. [15]

Meals on Wheels is available through the Washington County senior centers. To sign up or verify eligibility in St. George, contact the St. George Active Life Center at (435) 301-7290. [9] In Cedar City, the Enterprise Senior Citizen Center also coordinates Meals on Wheels delivery. Call (435) 878-2557 to verify eligibility and sign up. [13]

Medicare Counseling: Free Help Navigating Your Benefits

Understanding Medicare can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to figure it out alone. The State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) is a national program that offers one-on-one counseling and assistance to people with Medicare and their families. [16] SHIP provides free Medicare counseling and assistance via telephone and face-to-face interactive sessions, as well as public Medicare education presentations and programs. [16]

SHIP counselors are highly trained and certified to provide free, in-depth, unbiased, one-on-one health insurance counseling and assistance to Medicare beneficiaries and their caregivers. [17] They are not selling insurance plans and do not offer enrollment services, so their advice is always unbiased. [17]

For Southern Utah residents, SHIP services are available through the Five County Area Agency on Aging. [3] You can reach them at 435-673-3548, Medicare counseling extension 171, or visit areaagencyonagingfivecounty.org.

The Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) program also empowers and assists Medicare beneficiaries, their families, and caregivers to prevent, detect, and report healthcare fraud, errors, and abuse through outreach, counseling, and education. [16]

Transportation Resources

For many seniors, getting to and from medical clinics, treatment facilities, and pharmacies is difficult. [15] Local transportation services can help lessen the burden. [15]

  • SunTran is the City of St. George’s public transit system, offering bus routes throughout the area. [18]
  • St. George Shuttle provides shuttle, bus, and charter services to and from St. George, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, and more. [18]
  • In Cedar City, a fixed bus route runs throughout the city, and a Dial-A-Ride paratransit service is available for the elderly, age 65 and over. [19]
  • The Five County Area Agency on Aging also provides reliable transportation for individuals 60 and older with no other means of transportation. [15]

Caregiver Support: You Don’t Have to Do This Alone

Family caregivers are the unsung heroes of senior care, but the role can be exhausting. The Utah Caregiver Support Program offers in-home services that support family caregivers of individuals with health, mobility, neurological, or functional limitations, in hopes of enabling them to care for their loved one as long as possible and delay facility placement. [15]

Services available through the AAA and Utah’s Division of Aging and Adult Services include individual counseling, support groups, caregiver education and training, respite care, and supplemental services like assistive technologies and emergency response systems. [15]

A survey found that 78% of adults 65 and older desired to age in place, meaning stay in their homes until they’re unable to. [20] But the ability to age in place is becoming harder, with seniors facing financial challenges, disability, and social isolation. [20] That’s exactly why knowing your local resources, and having the right support team, matters so much.
