You’re not failing at both. You’re doing two full time jobs that were never meant to overlap.
They call it the sandwich generation. Raising your kids while taking care of your parents, with your own life pressed flat in the middle. It sounds almost cute until you’re living it, and then it sounds like a Tuesday where you leave a middle school field in the third quarter because your mother fell in Middletown, and your daughter watches you walk to the car, and you apologize to her in the driveway that night while you’re answering work email.
Here’s the thing about a sandwich. Everybody thinks about the two slices. Nobody thinks about the part in the middle.
Your mother has you. Your kids have you. And you have a calendar app and a hope that nothing goes wrong in October.
So you start taking it out of your own column, because that’s the only column with any give left in it. You quit the gym. You stop returning the group text. You skip the vacation, the checkup, the thing you used to do on Thursdays that was yours. And because the subtraction happens a piece at a time, it takes about two years before you look up and realize there’s nothing left in the week that belongs to you.
That’s not devotion. That’s math, and the math doesn’t work.
There’s no trick that fixes it. But there is a thing we watch families do that helps more than anything else, and it’s smaller than you’d expect. They give away four hours.
One weekday morning. Somebody comes to your mother’s house, makes lunch, drives her to the pharmacy, sits with her so the day isn’t silent. She’s covered. You’re not the only one who knows her medication list anymore.
And you get four hours where nobody needs anything from you.
Your kids get a parent who isn’t running on empty. Your mother gets a daughter instead of a scheduler. You get one morning.
You’re the middle of it. Somebody should be checking on you too.
