You’re Not a Bad Daughter. You’re an Exhausted One.

What caregiver burnout actually looks like from the inside, and why respite care is maintenance on the only caregiver your mother has.

You snapped at her on Thursday and you’ve been carrying it around ever since.

She asked the same question for the fourth time, or she wouldn’t put her shoes on, or she said something about how you never call, and something in you went. You heard your own voice get sharp and you saw her face change, and now it’s Monday and you still feel sick about it.

Here’s what that was. That was a person running on four hours of sleep, a full time job, a kid who needs a physical form signed, and eleven months of being the only one who shows up. That wasn’t cruelty. That was the tank hitting empty in front of the one person who can’t be rescheduled.

Caregiver burnout doesn’t look like collapse. It looks like a short fuse and a lot of guilt. It looks like resentment that makes you feel like a monster, followed by shame about the resentment, on a loop. It looks like crying in the car outside the house before you go in.

And it makes you worse at the thing you’re giving up everything for. Tired people forget medications. Tired people miss the bruise. Tired people drive badly on the Parkway.

So the break isn’t a luxury and it isn’t a betrayal of her. It’s maintenance on the only caregiver she’s got.

It also doesn’t have to be dramatic. Respite care can be four hours on a Saturday so you can sleep past seven. It can be one weekday morning that’s yours. Somebody comes to the house, she’s safe and fed and has company, and you go be a person for a little while.

You’ll apologize to her, and she’ll have mostly forgotten, and you’ll still be thinking about it next month. That’s how you know you’re not a bad daughter.

Take the morning.
