Seniors Helping Seniors® Bethesda has helped hundreds of families in Bethesda, Potomac, and the surrounding areas to care for their senior loved ones. One such family is profiled below. Seniors Helping Seniors® Bethesda obtained permission the client and his family for this profile.
Bob
Bob was a retired teacher and baseball coach who developed dementia. His loving son and grandchildren lived just around the corner and were happy to care for him. However, Bob’s care needs grew as his dementia progressed, and it became increasingly more difficult for Bob’s family to care for him while maintaining their other commitments. They reached out to Seniors Helping Seniors® Bethesda for help when they could no longer care for Bob by themselves.
Seniors Helping Seniors® Bethesda arranged for a caregiver named Florence to be with Bob during the day while his family was at school and work. Florence was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin whose career included work as preschool teacher, a social worker, and an Assistant Minister in the Liberian Ministry of Education.
Florence and Bob initially bonded over maple syrup. Bob grew up making maple syrup with his family in West Virginia, and Florence had experience making homemade maple syrup from her time at the University of Wisconsin. They bonded over their shared experience of making maple syrup and became fast friends.
Florence provided dementia care and companion care to ensure that Bob remained safe and comfortable in his own home during the day. This involved preparing meals, going for walks, light housekeeping, running errands, and generally providing oversight and support. Over time Bob’s care needs increased, and Seniors Helping Seniors® Bethesda progressively expanded service to accommodate these additional needs.
Bob’s family remained a constant presence in his life and spent so much time with Florence that she became like part of the family. They even included her in the family Christmas card!
Seniors Helping Seniors® Bethesda cared for Bob until the end, and enabled him to remain in his home and close to his family. He passed away with dignity and surrounded by his family and loved ones. Florence was asked to speak at the funeral, and she continues to stay in touch with Bob’s family.
