Fall-Proofing a Home in 30 Minutes

Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Every 11 seconds, an older adult is treated in an emergency room for a fall. Every 19 minutes, an older adult dies from one. These aren’t rare events. Falls are the number one cause of injury and injury-related death among adults over 65.

And here’s what makes it personal: most of those falls happen at home. Not on icy sidewalks or in unfamiliar places. In the hallway. In the bathroom. On the way to the kitchen at two in the morning.

The good news is that many of these falls are preventable. And you don’t need a contractor or a weekend renovation project to make a real difference. You need thirty minutes and a walk through your parent’s house.

Start in the bathroom, because that’s where the most dangerous falls happen. Is there a grab bar next to the toilet? One inside the shower or tub? If not, they’re inexpensive and most can be installed in minutes. Is there a non-slip mat in the tub? Is the bathroom floor slippery when wet?

Move to the hallways and stairs. Are there nightlights along the path from the bedroom to the bathroom? This is the walk your parent makes at two in the morning, in the dark, half asleep. A few cheap nightlights can prevent the fall that changes everything. Are there loose rugs? Remove them. Are the stairs clear of clutter? Is there a sturdy handrail?

Check the kitchen. Are there things your parents use every day? Plates, cups, coffee, on a reachable shelf? Reaching overhead and climbing on step stools are fall risks that are easy to eliminate by simply rearranging.

Look at the living areas. Are there cords running across walking paths? Furniture placed in a way that creates tight squeezes? Chairs and couches that are so low they’re hard to get out of?

Finally, look at their shoes. Worn out slippers with no grip on the bottom are involved in more falls than people realize. A pair of supportive house shoes with non-slip soles is one of the simplest upgrades you can make.

Thirty minutes. That’s all it takes to dramatically reduce the risk of a fall that could lead to a broken hip, a hospital stay, surgery, and months of painful recovery.

Here’s something our caregivers do that families don’t always think about: when our caregivers are in your parent’s home regularly, they naturally become an extra set of eyes for falling risks. They notice the rug that’s bunching up. They see the cord that got moved across the hallway. They notice when your parent is unsteady on their feet in a way they weren’t last week. That ongoing presence catches things that a single walk-through can miss, because fall risks aren’t static. They change as your parent’s home changes and as their mobility changes. If you’d like someone in your parent’s home who’s not only providing companionship and daily support but also watching out for the small things that keep them safe, let’s talk. It’s one of those things that sounds simple but can genuinely be the reason your parent stays safe at home for years to come.
