Your Hyper-Local Senior Resource Guide for Northwest Tucson: Marana, Oro Valley, and Beyond
If you’re a senior living in Northwest Tucson — or an adult child helping a parent navigate this next chapter — you already know that this corner of Arizona is a special place to call home. From the sweeping views of the Tortolita Mountains to the warm, tight-knit communities of Marana, Oro Valley, and Casas Adobes, Northwest Tucson offers a lifestyle that many seniors work hard to protect: independent, active, and rooted in community.
But knowing where to turn for support, activities, transportation, and care can feel overwhelming. That’s why we’ve put together this hyper-local guide — a practical, neighborhood-level look at the resources available right here in your backyard.
1. Start Here: Pima Council on Aging (PCOA)
If there’s one organization every senior and family caregiver in Northwest Tucson should know, it’s the Pima Council on Aging (PCOA). Founded in 1967, PCOA is the designated Area Agency on Aging for Pima County and has been a cornerstone of senior support in our region for decades. [1]
PCOA’s mission is “to promote dignity and respect for aging, and to advocate for independence in the lives of Pima County’s older adults and their families.” [2] With over 1,700 resources available in their online directory, they are truly a one-stop starting point. [3]
Here’s a snapshot of what PCOA offers:
- Medicare Counseling: PCOA provides Medicare presentations and individual counseling at no cost to seniors, helping them understand how Medicare works and find the plan that best fits their needs. [4]
- Caregiver Support Groups: PCOA provides caregiver support groups for any adult in Pima County providing care for someone 60 and older, or for someone of any age with Alzheimer’s disease or a related dementia. [5]
- In-Home Services: PCOA offers in-home support to those who struggle with performing activities of daily living, such as dressing, bathing, going to the restroom, cooking, and cleaning. [6]
- Healthy Living Programs: PCOA offers exercise classes, fall prevention workshops, and technology classes to help seniors stay active and safe. [7]
- Meals & Nutrition: PCOA and community partners provide meals served at lunch sites to older adults who are 60 and older, as well as home-delivered meals. [8]
- Legal Clinics: PCOA offers legal clinics throughout the month for older adults in Pima County, where volunteer attorneys make themselves available for one-on-one appointments. [9]

2. Local Senior Programs: Marana and Oro Valley
One of the great advantages of living in Northwest Tucson is the strong network of municipal senior programs right in your community.
Marana Senior Program
The Marana Senior Program offers a variety of services and recreation opportunities for active adults ages 50 and up. [10] Member benefits include access to exercise classes, enrichment classes, a fitness center, parties, and field trips. [11] Activities range from Bone Builders and Yoga to Mah Jongg, Line Dancing, Quilters Club, and Zumba Gold — there’s truly something for everyone. [12]
Membership is affordable, with an annual membership available for $40, a four-month option for $20, and a daily drop-in rate of just $2. [13] New members can even try a free 5-day trial pass. [14]

Oro Valley Parks & Recreation — Senior Programs
For seniors in Oro Valley, the Oro Valley Parks & Recreation department offers many senior-oriented activities and programs, such as painting and drawing, photography, fitness classes, volunteer opportunities, and more. [15]
The Community & Recreation Center also offers Renew Active and Silver Fit, which are Medicare fitness programs that give eligible individuals a classic membership that includes fitness classes and gym access. [16] These programs can be a wonderful, low-cost way to stay active and socially connected.

3. Lifelong Learning: OLLI at the University of Arizona
Staying mentally engaged is one of the most powerful things a senior can do for their long-term health. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Arizona (OLLI-UA) has been offering community learning for adults 50+ for over 35 years — with no tests, no grades, and no pressure. [17]
OLLI-UA is a member-led, volunteer-run nonprofit affiliate partner of the University of Arizona, offering hundreds of classes each year in-person and online. [18] Topics span literature, art, theater, film, sciences, history, politics, philosophy, economics, and law — and classes are peer-taught, supplemented by community experts and UA faculty. [19]
Importantly for Northwest Tucson residents, OLLI has a Marana campus, making it conveniently accessible for those in the area. [20] As one program coordinator described it, OLLI is “a healthy-aging program in disguise, keeping people engaged mentally and active socially, things you need to age in a healthy way.” [21]

4. Transportation Resources
Getting around is essential to independence. Here are the key transportation options available to seniors in the Tucson metro area:
Sun Tran — Reduced Fares for Seniors
Sun Tran, Tucson’s public transit system, offers reduced fares for seniors 65 and older through their Economy Fare program. [22] Riders who qualify pay 75 cents for a one-way trip and receive a free transfer for Routes 1-99. [23] Sun Tran buses are fully accessible, with lifts or ramps for boarding ease. [24]
Sun Van — Paratransit Service
For seniors with disabilities who are unable to use Sun Tran’s fixed-route bus service, Sun Van provides curb-to-curb transportation for ADA-eligible participants in the Tucson metropolitan area and parts of Pima County. [25] Transportation is a shared ride, provided on a space-available basis for appointments, shopping, and personal business. [26] Riders may have personal care attendants accompany them at no charge. [27]
To apply for Sun Van eligibility, contact the City of Tucson ADA Eligibility Office at (520) 791-5409.

5. Community Resources at Your Local Library
Don’t overlook the Pima County Public Library as a senior resource hub. Their community resources page connects seniors and families to a wide range of support, including PCOA’s comprehensive guide covering activities for older adults, financial assistance, home repair, housing, in-home services, legal services, meals and nutrition, medical equipment, and transportation. [28]
The library also connects seniors to BenefitsCheckUp, described as the nation’s most comprehensive online tool to connect older adults and people with disabilities to benefits — making it easy to see if you may be eligible for programs and how to apply. [29]

6. Pima County Older Adult Services
Pima County and its many community partners offer a number of services, programs, and discounts to senior constituents. [30] This includes programs coordinated through the Area Agency on Aging and various local nonprofits. Checking in with Pima County’s Older Adult Services page is a great way to stay current on new programs as they are added.

7. When You Need a Helping Hand at Home: Seniors Helping Seniors® in-home care NW Tucson
All of the community resources above are wonderful — but sometimes what a senior truly needs is consistent, compassionate support right at home. That’s where Seniors Helping Seniors® in-home care Northwest Tucson comes in.
Unlike impersonal referral platforms or large national agencies, Seniors Helping Seniors® in-home care NW Tucson is a locally rooted, relationship-first provider serving Marana, Oro Valley, Casas Adobes, and surrounding Northwest Tucson communities. What makes this organization truly unique is its peer-to-peer model: caregivers are active, compassionate mature adults — many of them seniors themselves — who are carefully screened, background-checked, trained, and matched locally. [31] Because caregivers share similar life experiences with the seniors they support, relationships feel natural, respectful, and genuinely comforting. [32]
Services include personal care assistance, companionship, daily living support, and specialized help — all delivered on a schedule that meets your needs, including overnight care. [33] Whether a senior needs a few hours of help each week or more regular support, our team tailors care to fit real daily life.
For families who are balancing careers, their own households, and the needs of an aging parent, having a trusted local caregiver in place can make all the difference. And for seniors themselves, having a friendly, peer-level companion who shows up consistently — someone who feels more like a friend than a stranger — can transform the experience of aging at home.
As their tagline says: “Like getting a little help from your friends.”
