New Resource Guide Helps Families Navigate Driving Retirement with Dignity and Safety

Resource Guide

For many older adults, driving represents far more than transportation. It symbolizes freedom, independence, confidence, and connection to the community. Yet as we age, changes in vision, reaction time, mobility, and cognitive function can make driving more difficult and, in some cases, unsafe.
One of the greatest challenges families face is knowing when and how to begin the conversation about stepping away from the wheel.

To help address this growing issue, Kurt E. Gray, owner of Seniors Helping Seniors® Metro Springfield and principal of KEG Consulting Driver Safety Services, has released a new resource guide titled:
Planning Your Driving Retirement: A Practical Guide for Aging Drivers and Their Families
This practical and compassionate guide was created to help older adults and their loved ones recognize warning signs early, start meaningful conversations, and prepare for the transition away from driving before a crisis occurs.

Drawing on decades of experience in driver safety, senior mobility, caregiving, and driver education — including 29 years with AAA and years working directly with older drivers and families — Kurt developed this guide to provide realistic solutions and encouragement during what can often be an emotional and difficult transition.

The guide explores topics including:
• Warning signs that may indicate declining driving ability
• How aging affects driving performance
• Strategies for starting difficult family conversations
• High-risk driving situations for older adults
• Transportation alternatives and mobility planning
• Emotional impacts of driving retirement
• Tips for maintaining independence and quality of life

The inspiration for this project also came from Kurt’s own family experience, watching his mother navigate the difficult decision to retire from driving in her eighties after increasing vision challenges.
“At Seniors Helping Seniors®, we understand that safety and independence often go hand in hand,” said Gray. “Our goal is not simply to tell someone to stop driving, but to help families plan ahead with dignity, compassion, and practical support.”

As a senior care organization built around helping older adults remain independent and connected, Seniors Helping Seniors® Metro Springfield recognizes that mobility plays a critical role in healthy aging. Whether through caregiver transportation assistance, companionship, or educational resources, the organization remains committed to supporting seniors and their families through every stage of aging.
The resource guide is now available for purchase through the KEG Consulting online store on Shopify, on eBay, and directly through KEG Consulting Driver Safety Services, as well as at select seminars, speaking events, and book signings throughout the region.
