Senior Resource Guide for Utah County and the Southern Salt Lake Valley

Caring for an aging parent — or planning ahead for your own future — can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re not sure where to start. The good news is that Utah County and the southern Salt Lake Valley are home to a rich network of programs, services, and organizations designed to help seniors live safely, independently, and with dignity right in their own communities.

Whether you’re a family member trying to piece together a care plan, or a senior looking for local support, this hyper-local resource guide is for you. We’ve compiled the most important programs serving Provo, Orem, Lehi, American Fork, Sandy, Draper, South Jordan, and surrounding areas all in one place.

1. Your Starting Point: Area Agencies on Aging

The best first call you can make is to your local Area Agency on Aging (AAA). These federally supported organizations serve as a hub for senior services in your region.

Mountainland Association of Governments (MAG) – Aging & Family Services

For seniors in Utah County, MAG is the go-to resource. MAG Aging and Family Services offers services, information, referrals, and advocacy regarding senior issues. [1] Their services include non-medical in-home services, Meals on Wheels, the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program, the Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIP), the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), and caregiver support, all serving Utah County, Wasatch County, and Summit County. [1]

You can reach MAG’s Senior Helpline at 801-229-3804, or visit their Senior Help Guide online for a comprehensive, searchable directory of local resources. [2]

Salt Lake County Aging & Adult Services

For seniors in Sandy, Draper, South Jordan, and the broader Salt Lake Valley, Salt Lake County Aging & Adult Services is a federally designated Area Agency on Aging that serves over 18,000 community members each year with a goal to promote independence through advocacy, engagement, and access to resources. [3] You can reach them at 385-468-3200 or visit saltlakecounty.gov/aging-adult-services.

Utah Commission on Aging (UCOA)

At the state level, the Utah Commission on Aging sponsors and manages UtahAging.org as Utah’s official statewide virtual resource center for older adults. [4] It’s a great place to explore state and local programs helping older adults remain healthy and independent. [4]

3. Meals and Nutrition Programs

Good nutrition is a cornerstone of healthy aging. Research shows seniors who do not eat nutritionally well-balanced diets often display symptoms similar to those of serious disease or illness, which may result in costly and often unnecessary treatment. [11] Fortunately, there are several programs in our area to help.

Meals on Wheels (MAG)

MAG delivers one meal per day on weekdays to homebound individuals age 60+ in Utah, Wasatch, and Summit counties. A suggested contribution of $4 per meal is accepted for home delivery, but no one is turned away for inability to pay. [12] Volunteers are also needed to deliver meals just one hour per week. [12]

Congregate Meals at Senior Centers

As listed above, most local senior centers serve lunch Monday through Friday at noon for a small suggested donation. These meals are a wonderful opportunity for social connection as well as nutrition.

Community Action Services and Food Bank

For seniors facing food insecurity, Community Action Services and Food Bank in Provo (801-373-8200) provides crisis assistance including food assistance, emergency shelter, rent assistance, utility assistance, and more. [13] They have locations in Provo, Lehi, and Spanish Fork. [13]

Utah Farmers Market Vouchers

MAG also offers $100 in vouchers for qualified seniors to buy fresh produce, herbs, and honey at authorized farmers markets statewide. [12] This is a wonderful program for seniors who want access to fresh, local food.

4. Transportation Services

For many seniors, getting to and from medical clinics, treatment facilities, and pharmacies is difficult. Local transportation services can help lessen the burden. [11]

Utah Valley Rides

Utah Valley Rides provides transportation services to seniors in Utah Valley. The program currently serves the Provo and Orem area on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, with Tuesdays reserved for Mapleton, Springville, and Spanish Fork, and Thursdays for Lindon, Pleasant Grove, and American Fork. [14] It is a curb-to-curb service: drivers meet clients at the curb of their homes and deliver them to the curb of their destination. [14] The suggested voluntary contribution is just $2 one way. [14] The program is a collaborative effort of the Utah Transit Authority and United Way of Utah County. [14]

UTA Paratransit Services

The Utah Transit Authority’s Paratransit Service is designed for people whose functional abilities require individualized transportation service. Trips can be scheduled in advance and provide riders with curb-to-curb transportation between home, work, appointments, and community destinations. [15] For eligibility and scheduling, call 801-287-7433 or visit rideuta.com.

Salt Lake County Rides for Wellness

For seniors in Sandy, Draper, and the Salt Lake Valley, Salt Lake County Aging & Adult Services offers transportation for those ages 60+ to and from medical, dental, and physical therapy appointments, with priority given to those in need of life-sustaining treatments. [16]

UTA Referral Line

If you’re unsure which transportation option is right for you, the UTA Referral Line (801-287-2870) was created as a resource for individuals with disabilities, aging adults over the age of 60, and veterans who need temporary assistance finding transportation solutions. [17] The line operates Monday through Friday, 7 AM to 5 PM. [17]

5. Medicare and Benefits Counseling

Navigating Medicare and public benefits can be confusing. Here are two free resources that can make a real difference.

SHIP – Senior Health Insurance Information Program

The Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIP) is a free health benefits counseling service for Medicare beneficiaries and their families or caregivers. [18] SHIP educates, advocates, counsels, and empowers people to make informed healthcare benefit decisions. [18] SHIP counselors are highly trained and certified to help you understand Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Medicare prescription drug coverage, supplemental insurance options (Medigap), and long-term care insurance. [19] Counseling is completely free and unbiased. [19]

  • Salt Lake County SHIP: 385-468-3200
  • MAG / Utah County SHIP: 801-229-3804

BenefitsCheckUp by NCOA

NCOA’s BenefitsCheckUp is a free, confidential online tool that helps older adults and people with disabilities find benefits programs they might be eligible for depending on their location. [20] Many older adults who don’t think they qualify end up getting approved for benefits or programs that help them save money and afford everyday living expenses. [20] Visit benefitscheckup.org to get started.

6. Caregiver Support

Family caregivers are the backbone of senior care in our communities, and they need support too.

Utah Caregiver Support Program

The Utah Caregiver Support Program offers in-home services that support family caregivers of individuals with health, mobility, neurological, or functional limitations, in hopes of enabling them to care for their loved one as long as possible and delay facility placement. There is no low-income requirement. [21] Contact your local Area Agency on Aging to learn more.

MAG Caregiver Support Groups

MAG offers caregiver support groups open to anyone looking for the camaraderie of the caregiving community, as well as a Friendly Callers program that provides companionship through weekly phone calls with volunteers. [22]

Senior Companion Program (Utah County)

The Senior Companion Program provides an opportunity for healthy, active seniors to help other seniors maintain their independence and provide respite to caregivers. [23] Senior Companions serve one-on-one with frail elderly and other homebound persons who have difficulty completing everyday tasks, providing grocery shopping, light housekeeping, meal preparation, socialization, and transportation to doctor appointments at no charge. [23] Call 801-851-7767 for more information.

7. How Seniors Helping Seniors® in-home care Provo–Sandy Fits Into Your Care Plan

While the resources above are invaluable, many families find that their aging loved one needs more consistent, day-to-day support than community programs alone can provide. That’s where Seniors Helping Seniors® in-home care Provo–Sandy comes in.

Serving communities across Utah County and the southern Salt Lake Valley, including Provo, Orem, Lehi, American Fork, Sandy, Draper, and South Jordan, Seniors Helping Seniors® in-home care Provo–Sandy specializes in non-medical home care that pairs active, independent mature adults with older adults who need extra help at home. [24] Caregivers provide personalized companionship, daily living assistance, and specialized support, all designed to help seniors remain independent in the homes and neighborhoods they know best. [24]

What makes Seniors Helping Seniors® in-home care unique is the caregiver model itself. Caregivers are active, compassionate mature adults, many of whom are seniors themselves. Because they share similar life experiences with the seniors they support, relationships feel natural, respectful, and genuinely comforting. [24] They are carefully screened, background-checked, trained, and matched locally. [24]

The team takes a personalized approach: starting with an in-home visit to learn about each senior’s needs, preferences, personality, and routine, then carefully matching them with a compatible caregiver based on skills, interests, and lifestyle. [24] The service does not require long-term contracts, giving families flexibility. [24]

Think of Seniors Helping Seniors® in-home care as the human connection that ties all of these community resources together. A caregiver can help your loved one get to their senior center, pick up their Meals on Wheels delivery, accompany them to a SHIP counseling appointment, or simply sit with them and share a conversation.
